Cocteau Twins - They Should Have Been BIGGER!
The Cocteau Twins
Today I give you the beautiful song 'Carolyn's Fingers'.
Cocteau Twins had one of the more unique sounds of the 1980's. I listen to their music and wonder why Cocteau fell dead in the water for many listeners in the U.S. This band should have been something big - what happened?? Maybe they were too far above the heads of a country who loved music like that stupid Dire Straits song 'Money For Nothing'.
It probably had to do with the strange 'language' of their music. I think it is supposed to be Gaelic or something. I can't claim to remember hearing a decipherable word in any of their songs. Maybe it was just made up gibberish (does anyone out there know?). Just before writing this, I dug my VERY dusty stacks of vinyl from under the bed to see if the cover or dust jacket of 'Blue Bell Knoll' had any lyrics - of course it didn't (foolish girl!)
But the cool thing is, you don't have to understand a bit of it to find it incredibly unique and beautiful.

Yes I definitely think if they sang in English it would have been better for the U.S of A. The country as a whole doesn't appreciate diversity as much as other countries do. They just don't get it. I like listening to Japanese twee bands a lot. Sometimes I listen to Korean music too.
Kim, I am not familiar AT ALL with twee bands from Japan, but would love to find out. Please feel free to post here info on your favorite, as surely many readers here would check them out.
Heaven or Loss Vegas is their best in my opinion. I love Cherry Coloured Funk!
oops! I meant Heaven or Las Vegas!
I loved the music of the 80s! Don't remember them.
I was never a big cocteau fan but I did like Heaven or Las Vegas as well. I was totally into synth pop though so it's no surprise that their slower indie sound did hit the mark with me.
head bitch, I really like all their stuff, except for some really early stuff. I don't remember exactly, but I think some of that was a bit to 'punkish' or dark for my tastes. I don't remember exactly, but I lsitened to their first album or two and thought it wasn't nearly as great as the later stuff. But Blue Bell Knoll and Treasure are just great.
I read somewhere that Robert Smith said that they were his favorite band - you can really hear that influence in some of The Cure's music.
I was introduced to the Cocteau Twins while traveling around France in 1986. I hooked up with a mohawked DJ at an Antibes hostel. I think their music is one of those things best savored stoned.
I so agree with you. My boyfriend, The Editor, doesn't get them at all. He is a word guy....says he can't understand the words. I'm am a tune girl....you don't need to understand the words to hear how beautiful they are. I adore them. I have a boxed set of limited edition CD's of The Cocteau Twins!
